The following is a submitted southern Spain vacation trip report. Its... interesting:

Recently I went to southern Spain for some business. Im not at liberty to say what that was, but what you do need to know is that I was to meet Paco in Granada at 15:00 sharp. The business at hand was to get some coffee, which is called cafe in southern Spain. Went to the best cafe in the city. Notice: cafe can also mean a place that sells cafe in the same way that it does in the states. Went to the cafe. Told paco to go to a completely different one. That was part of the plan.

Got a call from Paco on my cell phone a little later. Told him to hurry up and hung up before he could say anything. Forgot about Paco and went over to one of the outdoor movies that was playing at some festival. Some Spanish guy started talking to me in Spanish. I said "speak spanish to me one more time and see what happens." he knew what was up and shut his mouth prudently.

I said to myself "yo, here I am, in southern Spain. Time to go watch a bullfight." Asked some guy where the bullfight was at, and when he started with his southern Spain dialogue I said "hold on son, speak English or pay the price!" He told me that the bullfights were during the day and I had to buy tickets, I was like "thats not gonna work!" Told him to show me to the nearest cafe instead.

Went to the cafe he pointed out. Saw Paco sitting there. I said "hey yo Paco, what the hell?" he started complaining to me about me being late. I told him I was on southern Spain time and to deal with it and order me a cafe. He went up to get me the coffee and I saw a nice ice cream place out of the corner of my eye. Knowing that ice cream is good everywhere, I got up and ran over there so Paco couldn't see me. Hid behind a bush and watched Paco looking for me. Some Spanish girl was laughing at me and asked me something in Spanish and I told her to quit ruining my hiding place.

Saw Paco walk off in disgust. Laughed to myself and thought about what ice cream to get. Didn't matter. I motioned to them with my hands to avoid talking and I got what I got. It was alright. Was about half way done with my ice cream and then gave it to some Spanish kid. Told him I had a flight to catch.

Vera Playa gets its name from the town of Vera which is located in the eastern, coastal, region of Almeria in Andalusia, southern Spain. Playa is the Spanish word for beach. The stretch of coast that Vera Playa is located on is called the Costa de Almeria. The beach is fairly coarse golden sand and stretches, unbroken, for several kilometres. One kilometre of the beach is designated as officially nudist and it is in the area of this section that the fully naturist resort of Vera Playa has been built.

Over the years, since its humble origin as a camp site, development has been continuous and the resort is now Europe's second largest and most modern naturist resort. It is comprised of twelve urbanizacions - a Spanish word that describes communities of privately owned properties that share common facilities such as swimming pools, gardens, maintenance, cleaning etc. The urbanizacions in Vera Playa are served by shops, bars and restaurants within the naturist area. This means that wherever you stay within the resort, it is okay to walk from your apartment to the pool, the garden, the beach, the bar, the restaurant or the shop without getting dressed. As well as most of the properties in the urbanizacions being available for holiday rental, Vera Playa offers one other form of holiday accommodation; a fully naturist hotel. You can find plenty of web-sites offering holiday accommodations in the resort by typing the key words "Vera Playa Naturist" into the Google search query. Use some of the better sites to get an overview of the resort and its urbanizacions but search deeper to find sites that feature specific, privately owned apartments. These, can often be cheaper and it is usually possible to negotiate the rent by emailing the owner. Last year we found an apartment that we particularly liked listed on several of the larger sites with a price of 400 euros per week for the period we wanted to take our vacation. With a little more searching, we were able to find the owner's own website who we then emailed and managed to negotiate with, a three week period for only 900 euros, saving us 100 euros per week. This method does preclude the possibility of paying online by credit card however, because private owners rarely have credit card facilities.

The weather in this part of Spain is about as good as it gets. Summer rainfall is extremely rare and sunny days are practically continuous throughout June, July and August. Even the spring weather provides plenty of days that are warm and sunny enough for sunbathing much of the time, whilst autumn often retains a good deal of the summer heat right up until November. The chance of some heavy rain increases around this time and there can be some fairly cold weather during the winter months. Even in December, January and February, however, there are often days when it warms up sufficiently for those who live in the resort to strip off and lay out for a few hours soaking in the winter sun.

Things to do around Vera Playa:

It has to said that the scenery in the immediate vicinity of Vera Playa is not particularly inspiring. Neither are the nearby towns of Vera and Garrucha the least bit picturesque or culturally significant in any way. The nearest place that is worth seeing is Mojacca, a white hilltop town with over 2000 years of history. It is located about ten kilometres west of Vera Playa. A few kilometres further in the same direction is a beautiful area of protected parkland called the Parque de Natural Cabo de Gata. Its hills, villages and many secluded coves are most definitely worth exploring. There is also an area of saltpans where thousands of migrating birds, including flamingos, stop en route to and from Africa every year. Also within easy reach of Vera Playa is the popular tourist attraction of Granada.

However, the main reason for having a holiday in Vera Playa is to sunbathe and enjoy relaxing, nude leisure in this family oriented, naturist resort. That and the very high standard of self catering accommodation is the reason we will be returning again this summer - our fifth successive year.

Vacation to the Axarquia in Southern Spain

The Axarquia is one of the most beautiful areas on the planet but until a few years ago I had never even heard of it! It is in Southern Spain about a half an hours' drive from the Mediterranean between the towns of Velez Malaga and Nerja. The Axarquia was the name given by the Moors which literally means "the land to the East" - as opposed to the Algarve, "the land to the West" The sierras Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama are stunning ranges with the highest mountain, La Maroma being 2065ms high - over 7000 feet. Nestling on the lower slopes are attractive white villages, giving us an impression of how life used to be, not so many years ago. My husband and I are lucky enough to live in a tiny village called Daimalos, which is in the heart of Axarquia. We moved here five years ago and since then I have spent many hours walking the area, which is certainly the best way to enjoy the magnificent scenery. Also, although it may get too hot for walking in July and August, for most of the rest of the year the weather is ideal.

Last Monday I went on the "Walk of the Bountiful Valley" as documented in Guy Hunter-Watts "Walking in Andalucia" and I will attempt to describe the walk, so readers can get an impression of this fabulous area. It was a beautiful day for a walk with bright blue skies and very clear and it was warm enough to be comfortable walking in a short sleeved T shirt and shorts, but not too hot as there was a gentle cool breeze. I started from our home in a village house in Daimalos [I still have not lost the thrill of being able start off for a good walk from my own front door.] This meant I had to walk for about forty minutes on a tarmac road which leads from Daimalos to the bigger village of Corumbela. This village is so big it has a bar as well as a shop! The road is very quiet as there is only one car about every ten minutes. The road is very windy and the climb to the start of the walk before Corumbela is quite steep, but the views of the mountains and the sea are simply fabulous.

The walk proper starts on a dirt track by a farm, where a mule seems to be permanently tethered outside. He is very friendly and sometimes I have felt very sorry for him when his rope is tied to a tree where he gets no shade. I set off walking along a ridge with views of La Maroma and the sierra Tejada on the right and the Mediterranean on the left. The land is cultivated growing almonds, olives and vines. On either side of the track there are several villas, generally owned by English people, mostly as holiday homes and so are empty most of the year. Soon I turned left and begin a long winding descent past a few farm houses. The first one had a mule and pannier just waiting for his master to begin his days work. The fields are so steep it is easy to see why the local farmers continue to use mules. Towards the bottom of the descent I left the track and cut across what looks like a field of wild flowers. They looked very attractive but completely obscured the path so I had to jump down to the next broader path which was also a mass of flowers. Still it was not as bad as the time I came with my daughter and this obviously fertile area was being grazed by a herd of goats. The goat herd just watched in amusement as these blatantly terrified English people pushed through his goats!

I continued my descent but by now as I approached the river the crops are very different as I walked through orange, lemon and avocado trees. At this time of year lemons are being harvested and also a fruit which the Spanish call a Nispero. I have never seen one before, but then in my former life I was an accountant working in the city of London. It is a sort of plum with a smooth peel which is easy to remove and has very tangy/sweet taste, as well as being extremely juicy. As I stopped to eat a couple, a female farm worker stopped her scything and came over for a chat. She complained that she didn't get time for exercise, so I couldn't resist pointing out that she hardly needed to, after the way I had seen her working. The local people in this area are very friendly and want to get to know the many English people who have settled here. Finally I arrived at the ford but after the torrential downpours of the previous few days it had become a fast flowing stream! Luckily I always wear sandals and quite enjoy a paddle but last Monday the water was so deep, it came well over my ankles.

I squelched up a steep by now cement incline and then just near the summit I encountered another problem. There was a big digging machine straddling the road repairing landslides caused by the rain, but it was so big it took up the entire road with a steep rock face on the left and on right a very steep and long drop to the river. To my great relief when I got close the driver simply 'curled up" two of the legs on the left hand side, allowing me room to pass.

Finally I arrived in the white town of Sayalonga whose name derives from the Latin for white robe. Like most of the towns in Axarquia, it clings to the mountainside so the streets are very steep. I made my way to a bar in the centre of the town and was relieved to see there was plenty of shade because people were covering the main square with awnings in preparation for the fiesta the following Sunday. The fiesta is to celebrate the harvesting of the nispero. I chanced upon the fiesta last year, when I walked to Sayalonga with my daughter. There were lots of stalls selling beer, wine and local produce such as almonds and olives cooked in numerous different ways. The main square had been covered to provide shade and there was a stage where local artists performed. My daughter was particularly enchanted by the flamenco dancers.

Much refreshed after a chilled glass of water I set off again on the route back to Corumbela. This begins opposite the town hall but there is no sign for the walk until you have walked along the route quite a distance. As on the outward journey the track took me through lemon trees, nisperos, lemons etc. The red poppies and large white daisies by the side of the path were very pretty. Soon I came to the river again but this time I crossed over it by means of a good bridge. I carried on walking up a cement track past a couple of stunning dream houses. This part of the walk is quite steep, so I had several pauses to get my breath and also admire the stunning views. The deep blue skies which we get so often here enhance the views.

The cement road gives way to good quality dirt track and I gradually climbed away from the sub-tropical area and back into the land of olives, almonds and vines. I came to an olive tree which has a lovely seat shape where I always stop to sit in the shade. Soon after this I could see Competa in the distance. It is a bigger, much busier white town, which now home to a lot of English people. After going past a farm with a herd of goats who look better than they smell I could see the end in sight as Corumbela appeared in sight. It has a 14th century miniaret dating back to the centuries when Axarquia was ruled by the Moors. Then I came to a beautiful picnic area which was created about a year ago. It is called "the three fountains" after the fountains which burst from the hillside. It is beautifully paved and has benches and tables where I sat and admired the views while I ate my sandwiches. So far I have never met anyone using this spot, but then I have not met any other walkers on the route yet! When I finally arrived at the tarmac road by-passing Corumbela I decided I felt perfectly fit enough to continue on to my home in Daimalos and once again think how lucky I am. I have had a beautiful walk, which was stretching but not too hard. Five years ago, when I was working in the city in London, I would have struggled to walk just to part of it. The views are simply unbelievable and even after five years I still marvel at them.

If you're looking for the perfect southern Spain vacation, consider the Costa Blanca area. The best way to arrive in the southern part of the Costa Blanca is by flying into the Murcia-San Javier Airport.

The airport is considered the gateway to one of the most beautiful regions in southern Spain, La Manga del Mar Menor. With near perfect weather, beautiful beaches and world-class water sports, it is no wonder the area is a favorite of international travelers. The Murcia-San Javier Airport makes it easy to get to La Manga.

Murcia-San Javier Airport is a civilian airport and military air base located 17 miles south of Murcia in the town of San Javier. The airport is operated by the Spanish airport authority, formally known as Aeropuertos Espanoles y Navegacion Aerea (AENA).

The airport is equipped to receive planes as large as a Boeing 757 or 767. Increased tourism and an influx of economy airlines flying into the airport have caused a tremendous jump in traffic. According to AENA, passenger numbers skyrocketed from 88,608 in 1995 to nearly 850,000 in 2004. More than 1.6 million passengers used the Murcia-San Javier Airport in 2006.

The history of the airport is as rich as the beautiful region that surrounds it. The Spanish navy obtained a large portion of land near the Mar Menor and Santiago de la Ribera in the early 1920s. The outstanding climate and ideal location near the Mediterranean Sea prompted the navy to develop an air station in the last few years of that decade. Construction began in 1928. Early projects included a hydrogen factory, small port, wells, tanks, hangars and warehouses.

In 1963, the Spanish Air Ministry was formally asked to open the Murcia-San Javier airport to commercial traffic. The request was granted, but it only allowed the airport to accept civilian flights when they did not coincide with military flights. The commercial traffic required a number of special features that the airport did not have, so upgrades were made. On July 20, 1964, the airport officially opened to the public. By May 1967, the airport was accepting both domestic and international civilian flights.

More upgrades were made to the airport in the early 1990s, making it able to handle four flights simultaneously. In 2004, the passenger terminal was enlarged to provide an additional 1,100 square meters of space for arrivals. The airport also features a gift shop and a food mart for passengers' convenience.

Unfortunately, ground connections to and from the Murcia-San Javier Airport are rather limited. The availability and quality of public transportation, such as buses and trains, are not consistent across Spain. However, you can rent a car at the airport and drive to your destination. You also can easily catch a taxi at any hour of the day or night to get you where you need to go.

The Costa Blanca, with its beautiful weather and many options for fun in the sun, entices many to visit or permanently relocate. Almunecar in Southern Spain

Almunecar is an historic town situated on the Costa Tropical in southern Spain, a perfect destination for any southern Spain vacation. The resort is popular with Spanish holidaymakers, although an increasing number of foreign residents have made this town their home in recent years. Almunecar's history dates back to the 8th century BC when the Phoenicians established a trading post here. After the end of the Roman occupation, the town became an important Moorish stronghold before finally being taken by the Christians in the late 15th century.

Almunecar's beachfront is divided in two by a large rocky outcrop known as the Penon del Santo. The best beach, Playa de San Cristobal, stretches westwards from this rock, while the Playa Puerta del Mar is located to the east. Close to the Penon del Santo is the Lori Sexi ornothological park which is home to over 1,000 birds. The many species include peacocks, doves, parrots, ostriches and water birds.

Almunecar's most dominant tourist attraction is the Castillo de San Miguel which overlooks the town. Most of what we see today was built after the Christians recaptured Almunecar from the Moors in 1489, although there had been a fortification on this site since Roman times. After the Peninsular Wars of the early 19th century, the castle fell into disrepair and used as a cemetery. It was eventually restored in the 1980's and opened to the public. Attached to the castle is a small visitor centre which houses various artifacts excavated from the site. There are more local finds in the Archaeological Museum, including an ancient Egyptian amphora that is thought to be around 3,500 years old.

The castle complex is home to the Alfareria del Castillo pottery, which produces objects inspired by archaeological finds. A short distance from here is the beautiful botanic gardens of the Majuelo park. These gardens contain Europe's biggest collection of sub-tropical plants. In the centre of the park are the remains of a fish-salting workshop that dates back to Phoenician times.

Another important historical attraction is the Roman aqueduct, built during the 1st century AD. Parts of the aqueduct are in excellent condition, including an impressive 70-metre long section with two tiers of arches, located just outside the town.

Almunecar's nightlife, which comes to life during the summer months, is centred on the old town's Plaza Kelibia and the bars along Playa Puerta del Mar. There are several good restaurants along the seafront, including Restaurante Calabre, which specialises in seafood, and La Galeria, known for its innovative cuisine. Southern Spain is full of towns with great nightlifes such as in Almunecar.

Around 4 miles (7km) to the west of Almunecar is the little resort of La Herradura, popular for its seafood restaurants, pretty bay and choice of water sports. The warm breezes which rise up in to the hills surrounding the town mean this area is also a magnet for paragliders.

Almunecar bus station is on the Avenida Juan Carlos I. There are buses from here to Almeria, Granada, Malaga, Nerja and nearby La Herradura. The town's friendly tourist office, which can provide information and maps, is situated near the Parque del Majuelo.

Spain Wins Euro 2008

Spain just won the Euro 2008 European soccer (futbol) competition for the first time in 44 years, which reminded me of how important soccer can be for European countries. If you are planning on taking a vacation to southern Spain or any place in Europe, it would be a good idea to see a soccer match while you are there. Even if you don't follow the sport, just to witness the excitement that it brings to entire countries can be an amazing experience.

The match Spain won against Germany yesterday for the Euro 2008 title was pretty exiting, despite being low scoring. The only goal, made by Fernando Torres was a perfectly executed light touch over the goalie that slowly bounced into the corner of the net. He beat a defender and flipped the ball over the approaching goalie in stride to score Spain's only goal, which would be enough to win the title.

I can only imagine how much rioting and celebration was going on in Spain after the Euro 2008 win, the biggest championship the country has won in a long time. I was in southern Spain during a Real Madrid and FC Barcelona match that caused so much excitement and mass celebrating in the streets that the police had to come in and disperse the crowds by force.

A European soccer match, especially an international one like one from Euro 2008 can be a great thing to see during a vacation to Spain or other place in Europe. There is no sport event in America that matters as much as many soccer games do in Spain, not even the super bowl. If you are going on a southern Spain vacation, try to find a soccer match to watch while you are there, or at least stick around for the crazy celebrations afterwards.

Nerja

Nerja is one of my favorite places in southern Spain, and it would be a great destination for any southern Spain vacation. This Costa Del Sol town features beaches of different sizes surrounded by rocky cliffs and beautiful scenery. It has become a popular tourist destination for good reason.

There are many restaurants and clubs in Nerja, as well as hotels and other places to stay. This all provides a pretty active nightlife in the southern Spanish town. When I was there a flamenco dancing demonstration was being given in the main square area near Balcon de Europa.

Speaking of the Balcon de Europa, it is the centerpiece of Nerja, a large balcony, or mirador, extending out from the shore that gives a fantastic view of the entire coastline of Nerja. This is a great place for pictures or to just take in the whole sight of the Mediterranean coast and the surrounding cliffs. It used to be a gun battery to protect the area but was destroyed by British forces in the early 1800s.

The beaches of Nerja are some of the best in southern Spain. There are many that are small and isolated stretches of sand in between rocky cliffs and boulders. These cliffs provide plenty of entertainment themselves. There are nice little paths running through them so you can explore the various coves they create. Sometimes you will be able to find small beaches only a few feet wide between two large rocks. You can climb on top of some of the cliffs for a great view and even jump off of them into the water.

Nerja also has larger more conventional public beaches that get pretty packed with people during the day. There are great restaurants on some of these beaches where you can get a meal of traditional southern Spain seafood dishes. If you are planning a southern Spain vacation to Nerja, make sure to check out all the different beaches it offers.

Nerja is a beautiful and scenic town in the Costa del Sol that will please anyone on a summer vacation. Many people all throughout Europe visit Nerja along with other beach towns in southern Spain for their great weather and location. Malaga

Malaga is a port city of the Costa Del Sol in southern Spain. Near the mountains of Las Alpujarras, this city is one of the largest in southern Spain, and a great destination for vacations. Besides being a great place for sightseeing and vacationing itself, Malaga is also close to many other southern Spain vacation destinations.

When you arrive in Malaga you will notice the varied architecture. There are normal southern Spanish streets and buildings but also big cathedrals and ancient fortress ruins. The city has a more tropical feel than others because of its beach side location. The beach itself isn't the greatest in southern Spain, but it is nice if you are already in Malaga. For better, more secluded beaches I would go to one of the many smaller towns of the Costa Del Sol. One thing Americans might like is that not only is beer allowed on the beach, but people walk around selling it.

Malaga has many impressive historical structures and architecture to see. There is the Cathedral, with its large and extravagant towers. The Gibralfaro castle is great to see but also offers a nice view of the city below if you make the hike up to it. Right next to the Gibralfaro is the Alcazaba, a very old Moorish fortress with a roman theater. All of these nice historical sites combine with the more modern tropical style of Malaga to make an interesting mix of structures in the city.

Malaga is also known for being the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, the great Spanish Painter. The Picasso museum in Malaga is one of the best in southern Spain. It is full of Picasso paintings and early sketches, and it allows you to see many of Picasso's less famous but still very interesting pieces. Pablo Picasso's birth house can also be visited in the city.

A short walk from the Picasso museum is Calle Larios, the main commercial street in the city. There are often street performers around here to entertain the people eating at one of the many cafes and restaurants. There are also plenty of stores for shopping or just looking around. This is a really nice part of Malaga that would make a great stop for something to eat.

Malaga is a great city in southern Spain to visit while on vacation. There is much to do in the city and its beach and harbor, but also many other southern Spain vacation destinations a short drive or bus ride away. With its own airport and easy access to other locations, Malaga can be the perfect place to start a southern Spain vacation.

The Costa Del Sol

The Costa Del Sol is a region in southern Spain and Andalusia, a little further south than Las Alpujarras, made up of coastal towns and communities along the Mediterranean. With its beautiful beaches and scenery, Costa Del Sol is a popular travel destination in southern Spain and Europe in general. The pueblos along the Costa Del Sol are full of great restaurants and hotels, and there are always festivals or events going on somewhere nearby during the popular summer months. The Costa Del Sol region is one of the highlights of southern Spain vacation destinations.

While the coast is known for its small vacation towns, the city of Malaga is also a worthwhile visit in southern Spain, and it is the main city of the Costa Del Sol. Staying in Malaga or at least stopping by for a while to explore the city on your way to some of the smaller Costa Del Sol communities is a goo vacation plan, as Malaga has its own beach and a lot of museums and sites to see. Many coastal towns are less than an hour from Malaga, and there are plenty of buses you can take south to the Costa Del Sol if you don't have a car.

The coastal towns on the Mediterranean are beautiful, closely packed communities of mostly white buildings set on cliffs and hills bordering the water. There are many of them all along the Costa Del Sol, but they all share similar features. Nerja is one of my favorites. It has stunning beaches surrounded by rocky cliffs. Not only can you go swimming, but you can hike around the cliffs and even jump off the large boulders into the water. Just watch out for the small jellyfishes that are in the water.

While I was in Nerja they had a flamenco dancing concert going on in the main lookout that give you an amazing view of the coast. These types of event happen a lot all over the Costa Del Sol, and it makes the experience all the more fun. In another town I went to a large festival where for one night people were allowed to sleep on the beaches in tents. There were huge bonfires around the beaches and fireworks being set off from floating platforms in the water. The Costa Del Sol can be one of the most enjoyable destinations in southern Spain.

The whole Costa Del Sol region is a popular spot for tourists and if you are going to southern SPain make sure you check out some of the coastal towns. They are classic vacation spots and great summer getaways but also have a distinct Spanish style. There is great scenery, food, and festivals. The Costa Del Sol should be a part of any southern Spain vacation.

Las Alpujarras of Southern Spain

Las Alpujarras is a beautiful region that should be a part of any southern Spain Vacation. This mountainous area in southern Spain is home to many nice white-washed towns and magnificent natural scenery. Most of these towns are a short bus ride from Granada, and it is well worth it to take a day trip to any of them to experience authentic rural Spanish life. Tourism is pretty big in this area but the mountainous towns keep their isolated charm.

When I think of southern Spain I think of the mountain towns in Las Alpujarras, and that is why they are a great place for a vacation. They contain close together, small, white buildings which are peoples homes, stores, and restaurants. Many of the residents have small farms with natural irrigation systems made to direct mountain glacier and snow melt water into their crops.

One of the best things to do in Las Allpujarras besides exploring the towns is to go on a hike through the southern Spain mountain paths. This is a great way to experience life off of the grid and see some impressive natural scenery. You may come across abandon cottages and small farm houses along your way, as well as natural irrigation systems that have been made by farmers. Try to find a path that goes near a river at some point so you can refresh yourself with a dip in the cold mountain water.

Las Allpujarras is an amazing part of southern Spain that will be one of the highlights of any vacation. It was one of my favorite places in southern Spain and I cant wait until i can visit it again. Make sure to plan a day trip to at least one of the mountain towns in Las Allpujarras during your southern Spain vacation. You can drive to them or take a bus from a city so they can easily be reached during any trip to southern Spain.

Visiting Alhambra in Southern Spain

Alhambra is one of southern Spain's biggest tourist destinations, and should be a part of any vacation into the region. This large Moorish fortress overlooking Granada not only gives the city an impressive landmark but also provides for some great views of the city itself. Head up to the Mirador de San Nicolas to take some pictures of the castle with a perfect view, and climb up to the top of the tower in the Alhambra to get a breathtaking view of Granada.

Alhambra offers more than just great scenery from below and views from above, while on a tour through the fortress you can admire the intricate engravings and textured walls. Inside of Alhambra there are many courtyards with fountains and sculptures, the most famous of which is the Court of the Lions, an extravagant open courtyard boarded by fancy columns and featuring an amazing fountain in the middle.

This southern Spain fortress has been expanded by Christian rulers who added sprawling gardens and The Palace of Charles V, a more modern but still historical and beautiful circular palace. This site is sometimes used for concerts, and while I was in southern Spain there was a great classical group from France performing there.

The combination of the huge main structure of Alhambra and the surrounding gardens and palace make it a very impressive and scenic landmark. It is full of history and a very important part of Granada. Any southern Spain vacation needs to include this amazing fortress.

Southern Spain Vacation Destinations: El Albaicin

El Albaicin is the older moorish section of Granada, and it is a beautiful and culture filled destination for a southern Spain vacation. This part of Granada is one of the main reasons to visit the city, it is a romantic and classically Spanish district. Many parts of it also offer perfect views of Alhambra, which is enough of a reason to visit on its own.

The buildings in this southern Spanish neighborhood are white and close together, creating winding pathways between them into small squares and plazas. There are many small restaurants and shops in El Albaicin but most of the structures are residential. The squares are where people gather to eat and sometimes enjoy some live music by street musicians.

One of the main spots in El Albaicin is the Mirador de San Nicolas, a square outside of a church that has an amazing view of Alhambra and the southern Spain mountains. This is a popular gathering place for tourists, residents, and local guitar players. Everytime I have been to the Mirador there has been at least one guitar player performing for whoever is around. At night the view from this square is even better, make sure you get a chance to visit this spot in southern Spain.

El Albaicin has many great restaurants and clubs that may be hard to find. I spent a long time looking for a jazz concert one night. I walked up and down the small streets and eventually got to the concert a little late. It was a great time though, seeing an awesome group playing in a scenic location in southern Spain. The concert was in an open roofed building that had a nice garden outside and a tower that gave you a great view of Granada.

On your way back towards the city, El Albaicin slowly morphs back into the normal style of the more modern sections of Granada. There is a nice strip of hookah bars right before you leave the old town. They have great tea and hookah, I would pick up some bags of their tea if you are going by, and stop in for a drink if you have time.

El Albaicin is a beautiful section of Granada that should be a part of any southern Spain vacation in the area. There are many places to explore and great views to experience. Take a night in your vacation to enjoy this classically Spanish destination.

Southern Spain Vacation Destinations: Granada

Granada is one of the main cities of southern Spain and defines a region of Andalucia. Many vacationers and tourists spend time in this city for its proximity to other attractions and some great attractions of its own. Granada is a popular city for students doing study abroad programs in southern Spain so English speakers wont be completely isolated.

In general, Granada is a densely packed city of buildings no more than five stories tall, with plazas featuring nice fountains dotted throughout. The main part of the city is not the most architecturally extravagant place in the world, but it does have a lot of nice buildings, especially near the plazas. Fruit stands, tapas restaurants, and clothing shops line the streets, along with southern Spain and Granada souvenir stores.

Some popular destinations in Granada include its cathedral, which is an impressive and huge structure from the inside and out, even though it is closely surrounded by other buildings making it hard to see. When I was there an outdoor movie theater was set up right outside the cathedral for a film festival. Anyone on vacation in Granada should make sure to stop by it.

Southern Spain, and especially Granada, is known for tapas bars and restaurants. These are places where you order a drink and get a random appetizer with it. They can be anything from fish to bagel sandwiches. You can find them all over the place and most of them are very good so be sure to try a few out. Besides tapas bars, Granada is also known for its guitar shops where master luthiers make custom Spanish guitars. You can see some of them in action from the windows in their shops.

Granada is also a great place to visit on a southern Spain vacation because it is close to so many other destinations. It is one hour from the coast and many smaller Costa Del Sol pueblos and towns. Even closer are the white-washed mountain pueblos of Las Alpujarras. One of the great historical structures in the world, Alhambra, is within sight and walking distance of Granada as well. Granada is a great destination for a southern Spain vacation.

Weather and Climate In Southern Spain

If you are planning a vacation or trip to southern Spain, its a good idea to know what the weather and general climate will be. Although the weather will vary between different regions of southern Spain, it can be generalized pretty accurately. Most vacations and tourism will occur in the summer, when it is hot and dry just about all the time.

Summer days in southern Spain are sunny and can range from warm to very hot. In the beginning months of the season it can be pleasantly warm for most of the day, but in July and August every day will be searing. Sometimes in these months it can be almost unbearably hot, but the people of southern Spain have evolved customs and lifestyles to deal with this.

Siesta occurs in the middle of the day, when the sun is intense and the temperature is the highest. Its a good time to take a nap and wait for the more comfortable climate of the evenings and night. In Spanish cities, shade is provided by close buildings and tarps suspended above the streets. Once the heat of midday has past people return to the streets for the evenings and late nights, which can have have very nice mild weather.

It hardly ever rains in southern Spain during these summer months. When I was in Granada for a few weeks it rained once, for five minutes, and that was it. I remember it being cloudy one morning and wondering what was going on. Every other day it had been consistently dry and sunny. Prepare to get a tan if you are spending any time in Andalucia.

During the other seasons of the year southern Spain has a much more mild climate that may resemble other parts of the world more, there is even some rain from time to time. But if you are going to the Costa Del Sol and the rest of southern Spain for a summer vacation, the story is hot, dry, and sunny.

This site is a travel guide for southern Spain vacations and visits. I lived in Granada, one of the major cities in southern Spain, for a while and I learned a great deal about the area and the fun places to go. There are many exiting destinations in southern Spain and the Costa Del Sol region, and this site will tell you where they are.

A rich culture and vibrant history can be observed in many of the small towns along the southern Spanish coast, but there is also much to do in the larger cities. Museums filled with treasures of famous Spanish artists such as Pablo Picasso can be found in the region, as well as ruins of Muslim castles and fortresses. For a more isolated experience, the mountain pueblos of southern Spain and Las Alpujarras will show you a beautiful natural landscape.

Southern Spain has a lot to offer travelers and vacationers of all types.
